Rano Breaks Ground on Satpol PP’s Bedah Rumah Program in West Jakarta

"To be honest, I am quite moved today because this program is a result of the care shown by our colleagues in Satpol PP. While we have various renovation initiatives, this is a first-of-its-kind initiative spearheaded by the Satpol PP," he expressed, Wednesday (2/18).

He described the program as a concrete example of community care and mutual cooperation (gotong royong). Moving forward, he hopes that other Regional Government Agencies (OPDs) will replicate this social initiative.

He clarified that residents seeking assistance from the Bedah Rumah program must fulfill specific criteria, including legal land ownership and a residence officially categorized as uninhabitable.

“The program is strategically designed to support underprivileged individuals living with disabilities,” he noted.

The current project site, a 33-square-meter plot, presently shelters eight people from three separate families. The renovation will transform the cramped quarters into a more functional two-story house.

This reconstruction is expected to take two months, with a targeted completion date in April 2026. During this period, the Jakarta government has provided the family with temporary rental accommodations in the nearby neighborhood to ensure their comfort while work is underway.

Rano also lauded the collaborative spirit of the local community. Neighbors have not only volunteered their land for the storage of construction materials but have also actively participated in the physical labor of building the home.

He has urged the Jakarta Housing and Settlement Agency (PRKP) to increase the supply of public apartment (rusun) units as a long-term solution to improve the quality of life for residents.

He emphasized that vertical housing is the only viable path to providing decent homes in land-scarce Jakarta. Rano encouraged the public to begin transitioning from landed houses to high-rise living to adapt to the city's limited space.

“I am very grateful to the Satpol PP. Hopefully, this initiative inspires other government agencies to take similar actions,” he continued.

Jakarta Satpol PP Head, Satriadi Gunawan explained, the home renovation project aligns with directives from Governor Pramono Anung and Vice Governor Rano Karno for the agency to adopt a more human-centric approach. Following this mandate, all Satpol PP units in every city and regency have been instructed to launch social programs, with West Jakarta serving as the starting point.

Besides the housing aid, Satpol PP personnel provided two air conditioning units to the Khoirul Biqo prayer room and organized community cleanups to clear drains and repaint local neighborhood security posts.

"This initiative is entirely crowdfunded by our own members as a gesture of care. Other regions will soon follow suit with similar programs," he added.
